چکیده

It is common to think of reputation as assets –things of value that require costly investments to build, that can deteriorate if not maintained attentively. This paper shows that under reputational concerns, the equilibrium outcome of a highly competitive market may not be Walrasian. In particular, the incentive of committing to a specific share, the opportunity of building reputation about inflexibility and the anxiety to preserve their reputation can provide significant market power to the players that are in the long side of the market, even when frictions are negligible. ∗This research was supported by the Marie Curie International Reintegration Grant (# 256486) within the European Community Framework Programme. Volker Britz Optimal Value Commitment in Bilateral

We propose a new model to study the role of commitment as a source of strategic bargaining power. Two impatient players bargain about the division of a pie under a standard bargaining protocol in discrete time with time-invariant recognition probabilities. Instantaneous utility is linear, but players discount the future by a constant factor. Before bargaining starts, a player can commit not to ...

A Bargain Might Not Exist: How the Distribution of Power Causes War

This paper challenges the conventional wisdom about bargaining and war. If more than two players bargain, or if war can end in stalemate, then a bargain that all actors prefer to war may not exist—even if there are no information problems, commitment problems, principal agent problems, alliance dynamics, or indivisible goods. Existing models generate a bargaining range because they artificially...

Household bargaining over fertility: Theory and evidence from Malaysia

We develop and test a model of household bargaining over fertility when transfers between spouses are possible. The model makes precise how the fertility preferences of each spouse translate into fertility outcomes. We show this depends on whether or not spouses can commit to their future actions within marriage. If couples bargain with commitment, fertility outcomes take account of both spouse...

Price Dispersion with Directed Search1

We model a market where identical buyers direct their search to identical capacity-constrained sellers. Sellers cannot fully commit to the list price so strategic bargaining may determine the sale price. We study search and pricing behavior in symmetric equilibrium. Sale prices exhibit equilibrium dispersion as they respond naturally to local demand conditions. Uncoordinated search decisions le...
